Yarra Yering Members Tasting 2011 Vintage

Many many moon ago, I was fortunate to attend the 2011 Yarra Yering vintage release tasting. I’m sure that I will not tire of this little winery and look forward to eventually have a long list of vintage tasting notes to share with you all in years to come. For now, (and to be updated in past and future posts), a link to the back vintages will be situated at the end of each members tasting.

The 2011 vintage fell a bit short to me especially after the standout vintage of 2010. Wines generally felt a bit tight and closed, little less balanced as usual and will require some time in the bottle. The whites were found wanting whist the dry red stalwarts led the charge and as usual the Carrodus labels didn’t disappoint. A little warmth in the glass will serve this vintage well and the back vintage bracket showing you what could be with a little patience.

In the previous 2010 post, I mentioned I missed out on the private tour around the very picturesque vineyard but was lucky enough to jump into one this year. If you get a chance, it is well worth it, digging into the dusty cellars of this boutique wonderland.

No delicious sparkling this year (if you find some, snap them up!) so straight to the tasting table.

whatimdrinkingatthetime YY Whites 2011

Bracket 1: The Whites
Yarra Yering Dry White No.1 2011
Yarra Yering Chardonnay 2011
Yarra Yering Carrodus Viognier 2011

Yarra Yering Dry White No.1 2011
Released since 2000, a Semillon blend with a splash of Chardonnay. Nice mix of buttery and acidic notes, peach and sour grapes. Attack is tart, lemony, then mellows and brings shortbread. Finishes mellow, light, tingly with a consistent firm line of acidity. Not too exciting but still full of minerality and crystal clear, very Riesling like and great with oysters.

Yarra Yering Chardonnay 2011
Nose is little closed at the moment, buttery in the background with the same dry white no 1 nose. Attack is a little watery, more acidic than expected and light bodied. Disappointing right now, especially for fruit from 1969 vines, currently flat and hollow. Time added more structure and balance but still disappointing.

Yarra Yering Carrodus Viognier 2011
A mixed bag on the nose with kiwi fruits, stones, some hard cheese and cold cuts. Attack has a pleasant wash of wax, little cream, tight tannin structure with a nice acidic backbone. A well made wine looking for a bit of age, finishing again similar to the previous wines with white peach, pine a lemon rind complexion. Go the black label, they rarely disappoint!

whatimdrinkingatthetime YY Pinot 2011

Bracket 2: Pinot Noir
Yarra Yering Pinot Noir 2011

Yarra Yering Pinot Noir 2011
Yarra Yering Pinot Noir is a rare breed with not many vintages made so grab a few if you can find some. The 2011 shows a good strong pinot nose of strawberry, twigs and berry, dry dirt and brown grass. Ethereal attack, slightly unbalanced right now with tannins and acidity fighting for supremacy. Lacking purity of fruit finishing a little more balanced but still needs time to develop.
Warmth really brings this to life binding and balancing this together but also bringing up earthy tones and mushrooms, some root and green veggies like asparagus and sprouts…sounds meh but is quite a good wine and needs a little TLC when serving.

whatimdrinkingatthetime YY Shiraz 2011

Bracket 3: Shiraz Blends
Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz 2011
Yarra Yering Dry Red No 2. 2011
Yarra Yering Carrodus Shiraz 2011

Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz 2011
A crowd favourite showing lovely red earth, brambles, dried apples and a touch of poached pears with a dash of pepper. Attack is deceptive, dusty tannins on a bed of sandy wood and bark, lemon rind, oily whist coarse at the same time. Finishes similar to the mid palate and long. A complex textural wine again pushing tannin and acidity over fruit making me think that this will need about 3-5years before it begins to develop. Too tight right now but has enough muscular punch to stay the course.

Yarra Yering Dry Red No 2. 2011
Bay leaf, clay with rocky backbones and nutty notes. Attack is gentle, follows on with the rocky gravel aspects but has good acid and fruit balance. Mid palate brings some power and structure, dash of coffee and chocolate, light body and integration we know and love. Finishes light, well balanced acidity with good length and weight. Finally…some old world elegance.

Yarra Yering Carrodus Shiraz 2011
Subtle nose, potpourri, rose petals and a silky and dusty texture. Attack is just as subtle, old world style, crisp, lean with flavours building to a midpalate of cold cuts, Italian spices with green olives and sour cherry finishing into a breezy and cold castle stonewall finish. Quite good…most good and looks like a great wine to cellar.

whatimdrinkingatthetime YY Bordeaux 2011

Bracket 4: Bordeaux Blends
Yarra Yering Argincourt Cabernet Malbec 2011
Yarra Yering Dry Red No 1. 2011
Yarra Yering Carrdus Cabernet Merlot 2011

Yarra Yering Argincourt Cabernet Malbec 2011
Malbec has become more prominent in this blend as of late, showing a nose that is minty, menthol, and eucalyptus, sharp and to the point. Attack is generous and salivating, light to medium bodied, a sharpness of tannin and acidity with a coolness of peppermint wintergreen. Thoughts of roast lamb flush. Finishes tighter, focused with acorns, green capsicum, corn on the cob, vegetal whist being slightly syrupy. Im impressed. Great with a BBQ for that minty pesto kick.

Yarra Yering Dry Red No 1. 2011
Red brick nose, opulent and plush with a dash of crisp green capsicum, peppercorn, fresh pine and Christmas spice in the back. Attack is wet concrete, like a thump on the tongue, deeper than expected cradled in a bowl of acidity and just enough tannins and fruit to match. Vegetal, red caps coming in at the mid palate and surprisingly some pineapple, granny smith apple and red berries. Still a bit tight, needs a little time to open up finishing like white chocolate but a delicious and highly complex wine to savour.

Yarra Yering Carrdus Cabernet Merlot 2011
Nose of cheddar cheese, peppercorn, soffrito and i can see it pairing well with a ragu. Attack is gorgeous, a real eye opener. Smooth, velvet with digging tannins and sherbet acidity with a restrained mashed cherry and strawberries. The most balanced wine so far edging out the dry red no 2. Finishes exceptionally long, fresh and clean with notes of alfalfa, crisp iceberg lettuce, elegant with a salivating tannin aspect to make you want more. So sick and doesn’t disappoint like a fine French wine. My pick of a flight.

whatimdrinkingatthetime YY Portug 2011

Bracket 5: Italian Portugese Blends
Yarra Yering Dry Red No 3. 2011
Yarra Yering Barbiolo 2011

Yarra Yering Dry Red No 3. 2011
This really leaps out of the glass as a mix of plasticine and fruit pie, like a prima, before blossoming into cloves, cabbage, carrot, beetroot and vanilla essence. Really captivating on the nose and will spark conversations. Attack is lean, followed by a fresh fennel and liquorice flavour buy also a sweet waxy weight of uncooked cabbage. Very vegetal and seems to go with stews or a super supreme pizza. Finishes long, crispy peppered biscuits, a little buttery and Argentinian BBQ spices.

Yarra Yering Barbiolo 2011
Spiced BBQ meat nose, plush and bold. Attack is quite fruit forward, rich, chocolate and milk on the palate, creamy with a touch of green vegies in the back and finish. Medium bodied, silky textured and fuller mouth feel than the rest. Not bad!

whatimdrinkingatthetime YY Back Vintage 2011

Bracket 6: Back Vintages
Yarra Yering Dry Red No 1. 1999
Yarra Yering Pinot Noir 2004
Yarra Yering Dry Red Merlot 1990
Yarra Yering Dry Red No 1. 1996
Yarra Yering Dry Potsorts 2002

Yarra Yering Dry Red No 1. 1999
Rich 14 year old nose, apricots and burnt cheese on toast with fried fish eggs. So nice. Seriously nice. Attack of reduced cheese sauce drizzled with balsamic vinegar. Creamy whist being bright, lean and crisp finishing short but sharp, lemony but rich. Complex, contrasting and interesting flavours and a great reason to cellar, cellar, cellar. A really lovely wine.

Yarra Yering Pinot Noir 2004
Wooo yeah! Surprisingly bold nose for a 9 year old wine. Autumn leaves, brown earth, brandy snaps. Wow. Attack is phenomenal, clean, finesse with power and almost regal. Mid palate of the forest, extremely balanced yet distinguishable lines of acidity, tannin and fruit tasting like a woven basket, aged and well loved. Finishes like caramel, chocolate fondant with a lemon twist. Outstanding. Unfortunately not for sale but a window of things that could be.

Yarra Yering Dry Red Merlot 1990
Sweet smells of butterscotch and sticky date pudding, prunes and burnt caramel. Attack of aged leather, vanilla with persimmon and pomelo. Finishing quite sour but also like a toffee apple. I think it would go with apple pie and probably not doesn’t taste like it was intended to taste. Don’t wait too long on this one!

Yarra Yering Dry Red No 1. 1996
Smells like a duke of an old castle (sometime I don’t understand myself!). Dusty furniture notes, barbequed zucchini and fried tomatoes. Rich yet focused attack, bright and crisp, cooling acidity comes forth with a kiwi fruit and mango profile finishing much the same adding a touch of salt flakes. Interesting wine that may actually go with seafood but again, probably not doesn’t taste like it was intended to taste.

Yarra Yering Dry Potsorts 2002
Dried sultanas and milk chocolate on the nose, rich, vibrant with a hint of mint. Attack is bam! In your face, quite strong alcohol like rum soaked sultanas with pips and thick quince. Not a viscous wine but still bringing the depth and concentration to make it slightly overwhelming for my tastes.

I’m quite happy at this point and went round for a few more goes at what I considered the choice wines. Its no surprise that the Carrdus Cabernet Merlot tickled my fancy and wreaked havoc on my wallet once again. I’m sure I won’t regret it when the time comes. Thanks again to the Yarra Yering gang for a great day.
